Sydney Symphony Orchestra announces 26-year-old Australian Toby Thatcher as new Assistant Conductor

Featured imageThe Sydney Symphony Orchestra is delighted to announce the appointment of 26-year-old Toby Thatcher to the highly coveted position of SSO Assistant Conductor.

Thatcher, who will return from London to take up the position in Sydney, was one of five hand-picked international and Australian candidates who auditioned for the role with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra before a panel including the SSO’s Chief Conductor and Artistic Director David Robertson.

Thatcher will take the baton from Australian-British conductor Jessica Cottis, who has held the Assistant Conductor position since 2012, and has since gone on to establish a successful career both in Australia and internationally.

The Assistant Conductor position, supported by the Orchestra’s Premier Partner Credit Suisse and SSO donors Rachel and Geoffrey O’Conor, will see Thatcher mentored closely by Maestro Robertson, as well as the Orchestra’s visiting guest conductors. LOLA technology opens door to a world of possibilities for the performing arts in Australia

LOLA low latency technology demo at ITEC 2014

In an Australian-first demo, LOLA low latency audio and video streaming technology over AARNet enabled a synchronous performance by Trumpeter Panagiotis Karamanos, physically present with ITEC delegates in the Utzon Room at the Sydney Opera House, and Bassoonist Jordy Meulenbroeks, located in a studio at the Conservatorium.

Sydney ConservatoriumThe Conservatorium of Music, home of the Conservatorium High School is celebrating its centenary this year. The Conservatorium was established by the NSW Department of Public Instruction (today’s Department of Education & Communities) and officially opened on 6 May 1915 by the Governor of NSW, Sir Gerald Strickland in the presence of the Minister for Public Instruction, Arthur Griffith Esq.

Year 10 drama performance

The Year 10 Drama students have been working hard since Term 3 to put together a production of the Greek tragedy Antigone.

There will be a performance for the whole school on Wednesday, 5 November, 13:30-15:00 and an evening performance on the same day 18:30-20:00
