Richard Gill GOV HOUSE
Richard Gill at Government House on the occasion of his investiture as the inaugural King & Wood Mallesons Conservatorium Chair of Music Education, in the company of KWM Partner, Mr David Friedlander, and Mr & Mrs Ernie Friedlander.

The Conservatorium High School mourns the death of Richard Gill AO, one of the great figures in Australia’s musical and intellectual life.

Richard’s close association with the Conservatorium High spanned more than four decades. It culminated in 2016 with his appointment as the inaugural King & Wood Mallesons Conservatorium Chair in Music Education, the first endowed personal chair in the history of NSW secondary education. His most recent project with Conservatorium High students was The Eulogy, a documentary on the life of Geoffrey Tozer which was  premiered recently in the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Richard will be remembered as an inspiring teacher, as an indefatigable champion of the right of all children to experience the transformative power of music, and as a musician and mentor who brought joy and delight to millions.

Doubtless, there will be many musical events celebrating the life of Richard Gill. For its part, the Conservatorium High will be honouring its pledge to Richard to fulfil his special request for a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem to be given by the students of the Conservatorium High. This performance will take place in Verbrugghen Hall, Conservatorium of Music, on Friday, 22 February at 18:30

The School extends sincere condolences to Richard’s wife, Maureen, and their children, Claire and Anthony.
