International law firm, King & Wood Mallersons has endowed a chair in music education at the Conservatorium High School to be known as The King & Wood Mallesons Conservatorium Chair in Music Education. The inaugural appointee to this prestigious position is the internationally acclaimed music-educator and conductor, Richard Gill AO.

The announcement was made at Government House, Sydney, by KWM Partner, Mr David Friedlander, in the presence of Mrs Linda Hurley, wife of the Governor of NSW and Patron of the Conservatorium High School. In his address, Mr Friedlander stated his firm’s belief that music should be an essential part of every child’s education. “We want to lend our support to raising the profile of music education in this country.”  He praised the achievements and unflagging commitment to music education of Mr Gill – “at once, its most persuasive advocate and its most accomplished practitioner.”

KWM’s philanthropy in support of music education is something of a first in this country as the personal chair has been established through the NSW Public Education Foundation. Unlike university-type chairs, the focus of the KWM Conservatorium Chair is not academic research but practical, ‘hands-on’ engagement. “KWM believes that the most effective way of supporting the betterment of music education is by championing the important work of Richard Gill, especially his mentoring of teachers. We would also like to formalise Mr Gill’s long association with the Conservatorium High School and to facilitate his working more closely with both secondary and tertiary students of the Conservatorium.”
